Expanding the Mission of CELUG To Other Engineering IT Disciplines

Published by:

Since its founding in 2003, CELUG has been a “private” organization.  In that time, the organization has relied on its email list and annual Co-Located conferences at DAC.  As an informal organization, CELUG has helped dozens of companies improve their enterprise license reliability, availability and serviceability.

We have two important announcements regarding both DAC and the structure of CELUG going forward:

DAC 2018

Every year at DAC, we spend time talking about new tools and methods to create new electronic components.  However, we don’t talk about the infrastructure needed to run these tools and methods.  Building on the success we’ve had in the licensing space with the CELUG Co-Located Conference at DAC, I have worked with the DAC Executive Committee to expand the scope of DAC next year to include Engineering IT Ecosystem topics.  These topics are:

  • Grid Computing
  • Storage Management
  • Data Security
  • Cloud

This means two things:

  1. There will be some traditional “IT” booths on the floor.  We are working to bring some well-known Cloud providers, Distributed Resource Manager providers, storage suppliers and other IT suppliers for our industry.  We are still working details, so stay tuned for more information!
  2. We’re trying to bring more folks who support the infrastructure to DAC, which next year will be in San Francisco.  The goal is to expand on the success we’ve had with the CELUG model – bringing together people who are supporting IT infrastructure, those who write CAD flows and those writing the tools themselves.

CELUG Structure

We have matured over the years and with the expanded charter at DAC, it’s time we do two things:

  • Formalize our structure and become a trade association.
  • Form a trade association that caters to those supporting the Engineering IT Ecosystem (Compute, Storage, Security, Cloud, Licensing).  This association will be an “umbrella” organization which will represent different disciplines.  CELUG represents the licensing discipline.  CELUG will continue to operate as it has in the past (monthly calls, email list, presence at DAC, etc..).

Practically speaking, CELUG as an entity will function much as it has for over a decade.  The celug.com domain, website and email aliases will remain and the monthly meetings will still proceed as they have.  We will continue to partner with the ESD Alliance License Management and Anti-Piracy Group.  There will be license administrator specific content at DAC.  We think we have a good thing going for license managers, and we want to bring that to other disciplines.

The Steering Committee is engaging with an attorney now to begin the process of forming the new umbrella association.  There will be a poll on the site soon to collect ideas and votes for the name of the new organization.

These are truly exciting developments and we look forward to taking the same sense of community CELUG has built in licensing and extend it to other disciplines for the betterment of the industry.
